    A computer systems analyst is a person who is employed by an organization to plan and implement computer solutions to its business challenges. Their job involves designing and recommending necessary technologies for improving organizational efficiency and productivity, and conducting a cost and benefits analysis to help management decide if the proposed technologies are financially worthwhile.

    A computer systems analyst should be enthusiastic, inquiring, observant, analytical methodical and adaptable, and have the ability to relate to a wide range of people. They should be able to communicate effectively to explain complex issues to others in the simplest of ways.

    Computer systems analysts may do some or all of the following:

    • consult with management, staff and customers to understand an organization’s business

    • oversee the installation and configuration of new systems
    • test new systems and ensure they work as expected
    • train the organization’s staff on the new technologies

    Computer systems analysts usually work normal office hours, but may be required to work evenings and weekends to meet deadlines. Their job is usually office based, but they may travel to visit clients or attend conferences or seminars.
