• Electrical Engineering Technician Job Description

    An electrical engineering technician is a person who provides technical assistance to an electrical engineer and implements designs or technical instructions from them to solve electrical problems or invent useful electrical systems or equipment.

    An electrical engineering technician should be enthusiastic, analytical, methodical, adaptable and dependable, and have the ability to communicate effectively and follow instructions accordingly. They should have practical understanding of the theoretical principles of electrical engineering and the ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, drawings, and sketches.

    Electrical engineering technicians may do some or all of the following:

    • collaborate with electrical engineers and others to solve electrical problems or to provide electrical solutions
    • help estimate costs for electrical projects
    • write technical reports and proposals to clients or colleagues
    • build, test, install and troubleshoot electrical systems and equipment
    • inspect, repair and maintain electrical equipment and systems
    • perform electrical research and analyze results
    • supervise others

    Electrical engineering technicians usually work normal office hours, but may sometimes work evenings and weekends, or be on call. They work in offices, laboratories, workshops, manufacturing and industrial facilities.
