• Tailor Job Description

    A tailor is person whose job is to make, alter or repair cloths. They may specialize in making either men or female clothing or certain type of garments such as suits or wedding gowns. Their work involves discussing with their clients to understand their requirements, taking their measurements, and stitching clothes according to the designs specified by the clients.

    A tailor should be caring, friendly, respectful and helpful, and have a good sense of fit, color, and style, and knowledge of the different kinds of fabrics and the latest styles. They should be able to build trustworthy relationships with their clients and provide excellent advice and recommendations to them.

  • What does a Tailor do?

    Tailors may do some or all of the following:

    • discuss with clients to understand their requirements
    • advice clients on the different design options available to choose from
    • take the client’s measurement
    • work out the tailoring cost and how long it will take to make the garment
    • operate and use sewing equipment and tools
    • make, repair and alter garments according to the needs and requests of the client
    • cut fabric and sew pieces of fabric together to make garment
    • test the garment on the client, and make adjustments if necessary
    • keep record of the tailoring works done
    • keep the tailoring area clean and tidy
    • supervise and train junior tailors

  • Working Conditions

    Tailors usually work normal business hours, but may sometimes work evenings and weekends to meet deadlines. They work in shops, sewing rooms and factories. They may sit for long periods of time while working.

  • What is Required to Become a Tailor?

    To become a tailor, you will need to complete an apprenticeship with a skilled tailor. Experience is more important than academic qualifications in this field.
