    A computer support specialist is a person who identifies, troubleshoots and resolves computer hardware and/or software problems. Computer support specialists provide technical support to clients, individuals or establishments, experiencing computer issues by responding to their requests for assistance, diagnosing and troubleshooting their computer issues and providing advice to them.

    A computer support specialist should be enthusiastic, adaptable, analytical and methodical, and have the ability to respond to customers complaints politely, ask the right questions to determine problems and solve them in a timely manner. They should also have manual dexterity to use screwdrivers, soldering irons and other hand tools.

    Computer support specialists may do some or all of the following:

    • receive queries and provide answers to clients experiencing computer issues
    • guide clients on how to resolve technical issues
    • run test programs on computers and related equipment
    • configure and install software systems for clients
    • repair and perform routine maintenance on computer hardware, software and network systems
    • educate clients on how to properly use computer systems
    • guide and supervise subordinate support specialists
    • refer advanced problems to more specialized technicians for solution
    • keep record of issues reported and resolved

    Computer support specialists work long irregular hours if they work for themselves or small organizations to provide round-the-clock customer service, but if they work for big organizations, they may work on rotating shifts.

    Computer support specialists work in offices, computer rooms and customer service centers. They may travel to their client’s residence or office to offer support, or work from home, answering phone calls and replying emails from clients.

    To become a computer support specialist, you will need to have good technical knowledge of computer hardware and software systems. A degree or diploma in computer science, information technology, computer engineering or a similar discipline is helpful. You can also obtain relevant certification from well-known companies such as Microsoft or IBM to boost your chances of getting a job.
