• Hotel Manager Job Description

    A hotel manager is a person who organizes and controls the operations of a hotel by providing leadership, guidance and direction to the hotel staff to deliver excellent services while making profit for the hotel.

    A hotel manager should be well organized, enthusiastic, quick-witted, perceptive, visionary and creative, and have the ability to lead and persuade others, and make good decisions. They should be able to relate to a wide range of people and build good relationships with their customers and staff.

  • What does a Hotel Manager do?

    Hotel managers may do some or all of the following:

    • plan and update hotel restaurant menus in consultation with chefs
    • establish standards for personnel performance and customer service
    • plan and manage the hotel budgets
    • hire, train and supervise hotel workers
    • plan and organize staff rotas
    • maintain administrative records, prepare payrolls and pay bills
    • solve problems with customers or employees
    • plan and manage building maintenance, renovations and furnishings
    • organize entertainments for customers
    • inspect guest rooms, public areas, and grounds for cleanliness and appearance
    • plan and organize activities to promote and market the hotel

  • Working Conditions

    Hotel managers may work long, irregular hours that include evenings, weekends and public holidays, and be on-call. They work in offices and in public areas of the hotel. They may be required by some employers to live in the hotel.

    To become a hotel manager, you may be promoted from within the establishment and up the ranks or you may go through a formal training program and obtain a degree or diploma in hotel management, hospitality management or a similar discipline.
