• Make-up Artist Job Description

    A make-up artist is a person who creates art on the human body by applying makeup and prosthetics. Make-up artists apply make-up to models, actors, presenters and other people appearing in front of the camera or an audience to create a desired look or to make them look more appealing. They may also be responsible for styling the hair of their clients.

    A make-up artist should have self-confidence, imagination, creativity, focus, manual dexterity, and good physical and mental stamina. They should be able to speak clearly and professionally, and have a good eye for color. They should also be very knowledgeable about make-up and the various methods and techniques for applying them.

  • What does a Make-up Artist do?

    Make-up artists may do some or all of the following:

    • work with clients, cosmetologists, aestheticians and other people involved in a make-up design team
    • research and develop new makeup styles
    • talk to client to understand their requirements
    • apply makeup to the client using a color palette and different tools such as mascara, sponges, eyebrow shapers, lip liners, brushes, and applicators
    • style the client’s hair according to makeup
    • fix artificial hair extensions and weaves
    • make prosthetic devices used to alter the appearance of performers
    • wipe off makeup and reapply if the client is unsatisfied with it
    • market and sell cosmetics
    • sterilize makeup tools before and after usage
    • give lessons about makeup application
    • develop and maintain customer relationships

  • Working Conditions

    Make-up artists may work long irregular hours including evenings and late nights, if they work in the entertainment industry, but those who work in makeup salons and cosmetic stores usually work more regular hours.

    Make-up artists work in dressing rooms, spas, and makeup and hairdressing salons. They may travel for work, especially when involved in the entertainment industry. Their work can be physically demanding and stressful, and may involve exposure to chemicals.

    There are no standard requirements to become a make-up artist. Jobs in this field focus more on experience than educational qualifications.
