• Mechanical Engineering Technician Job Description

    A mechanical engineering technician is a person who provides technical assistance to a mechanical engineer and implements designs or technical instructions from them to solve mechanical problems or invent useful mechanical systems or equipment.

    A mechanical engineering technician should be enthusiastic, methodical, analytical and good at reading and interpreting mechanical design diagrams. They should have stamina, manual dexterity and good hand eye coordination. They should also have practical understanding of the theoretical principles of mechanical engineering.

    Mechanical engineering technicians may do some or all of the following:

    • collaborate with engineers and others to solve mechanical problems or to provide mechanical solutions
    • help estimate costs for mechanical projects
    • write technical reports and proposals to clients or colleagues
    • operate fabrication equipment such as hand tools, drill press, manual lathe, etc.
    • fabricate and evaluate prototypes, models and fixtures for mechanical systems
    • perform research, record and analyze results
    • install, inspect, test and repair mechanical systems and equipment

  • Working Conditions

    Mechanical engineering technicians usually work normal office hours, but may sometimes work evenings and weekends, or be on call. They work in offices, mechanical workshops, and manufacturing and power plants. Their job may require them to bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl and stand for long periods, as well as to lift, lower, push, pull, leverage and manipulate heavy objects.
